As I sit here in the library cafe, surrounded by people here, on the final open day of the year, to have a good old look at what Leicester University has to offer. Compared to when I began my studies I would say the goods on display have transformed from some sort of 'car boot' type offerings, to something more akin to a secret designer sample sale, hidden away down some trendy London backstreet.
Like a secret designer sample sale you are very keen on taking advantage of everything it has to offer, and at the same time are very worried that everyone else is going to find out about it. This is my current feeling about the University of Leicester. When I first enrolled the library was unfinished, the union was dilapidated, and the closest thing we had to a cafe was a self-service school canteen type of affair. It was there I sat with my mum on that open day 4 years ago making the biggest decision of my life over a cup of tea. Now people chat happily on their tours of the silent section of the library, noting with delight the diligent students at work.
I suppose I am just jealous that people are only just beginning their university journey, and I am coming to the end of mine with only a year left to appreciate the O2 academy, Starbucks, stationary shops and various deli establishments. Oh Leicester, I will miss you after all. Here's to another year just beginning, the end, not quite in clear sight just yet.
